Hollywood actor and director Michael B. Jordan recently shared his disappointment at missing the limited IMAX screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s animated classic, Princess Mononoke.
The film’s first-ever IMAX release was available for a brief three-day window, during which Jordan’s schedule prevented him from attending.
“I was mad I couldn’t be there! I was really upset because there was only a 3-day window and I was [busy], it actually bothers me, I need to see it in IMAX,” Jordan expressed in a recent interview.
Jordan’s admiration for anime is well-documented. He has previously cited his directorial debut, Creed III incorporated anime-inspired fight choreography and themes.
Princess Mononoke debuted exclusively in IMAX theaters in North America for the first time ever on March 26, 2025.
Presented by GKIDS in celebration of Studio Ghibli’s 40th anniversary, the special screening featured a brand-new 4K restoration.
The re-release earned an estimated $4 million ($3,871,049 as per Box Office Mojo for the first three days) from approximately 330 IMAX theaters in North America.
This opening weekend gross exceeded the film’s entire original U.S. box office run in 1999, which opened with $144,446 in just eight theaters before gradually expanding and accumulating a total domestic gross of approximately $2.4 million over its entire run.
